Crocheting the Amigurumi Body: Shaping and Color Changes

With the head done, the body comes next. It follows a similar logic to the head but with a different overall shape, more like a rounded cylinder than a sphere.

Starting the Body

Just like the head, the body starts with a magic ring and six single crochet stitches. From here, you'll increase gradually over several rounds until the body reaches the width you want. Since the body needs to look proportional to the head, it's worth checking the width against your finished head piece as you go, rather than just following stitch counts blindly.

The Straight Section

Once the body reaches its widest point, you'll crochet a longer stretch of rounds with no increases or decreases. This straight section is what gives the body its height and makes it look like a torso rather than a ball. How many rounds you work here depends on how tall you want the finished doll to be.

Color Changes for the Dress

If you're crocheting the pink dress directly into the body rather than making it separately, this is where you'll switch colors. To change color cleanly, crochet the last stitch before the switch until two loops remain on your hook, then finish that stitch using the new color instead of the original one. This keeps the color transition looking sharp instead of streaky.

Closing the Bottom

Decrease the rounds gradually to bring the opening back down, stuff firmly as you go, and close it the same way you closed the head. Leave a bit of extra yarn tail when you finish, since you'll use it later to sew the body to the head.

Attaching Head to Body

Once both pieces are stuffed, position the head where you want it on top of the body and use a yarn needle to sew around the edge where they meet, going through both pieces. Take your time with this step and check the head is centered and sitting straight before you finish sewing, since it's much easier to fix now than after everything is stitched down.

Next up: the arms, legs, and the bow that finishes off the whole look.
