Amigurumi Face Details: Eyes, Nose, and Whiskers Placement

The face is what turns a plain stitched shape into something that actually looks like Hello Kitty. This part is less about crochet stitches and more about careful placement, so it's worth slowing down here.

Placing the Eyes

Whether you're using safety eyes or small black beads, placement matters more than the eyes themselves. They typically sit a little below the halfway point of the face, spaced evenly apart with enough room between them. Before attaching anything permanently, hold them in place with pins and check the look from a few angles, since even a millimeter of difference in spacing can change the whole expression.

Adding the Nose

A small yellow oval sewn or embroidered just below and between the eyes forms the nose. Keep it small and slightly rounded rather than pointed, since a soft rounded shape reads as friendlier and matches the classic look better.

Embroidering the Whiskers

Whiskers are usually added with black embroidery thread, worked in simple straight stitches directly into the face fabric on either side, three per side spaced a small distance apart. Keep them straight and roughly parallel, since slightly crooked whiskers are one of the easiest things to accidentally get wrong and one of the most noticeable if they are.

Blushed Cheeks

A soft blush on the cheeks, either lightly embroidered with pink thread or dabbed on with a bit of blush powder or fabric-safe pink marker, adds a lot of warmth to the finished face. Keep it subtle rather than heavily colored, just enough to soften the expression.

Final Check

Once everything is placed, step back and look at the face as a whole rather than checking each piece individually. Small asymmetries are much easier to spot from a distance than up close, and it's much easier to adjust now than after everything is permanently stitched.

The last part of this series covers final assembly, common mistakes to avoid, and where you can find the complete video walkthrough of the whole process.
